Who We Are

We are a public benefit organization established to provide practical and sustainable solutions to textile waste in Kenya and beyond. We believe discarded clothing, fabric offcuts and other textile materials should not automatically become waste. Through collection, sorting, repair, upcycling, reuse and responsible recycling, we seek to extend the life of textile materials while creating environmental, social and economic value.

Our work brings together communities, artisans, young people, women, businesses, institutions and development partners to advance a circular textile economy. By connecting environmental action with creativity, skills development and sustainable product markets, we aim to turn a growing waste challenge into an opportunity for innovation, enterprise and inclusive development.

Background

Kenya’s textile industry, growing urban population, changing lifestyles and patterns of consumption have contributed to an increasing volume of textile waste, from discarded clothes and household fabrics to manufacturing offcuts. Much of this material still has value but is often disposed of, overlooked or underutilised. At the same time, Kenya’s diverse ecosystems; from the vibrant urban environment of Nairobi to the rich natural landscapes of the Maasai Mara, highlight the importance of responsible resource use, environmental protection and sustainable community development.

It is against this background that the Kenyan Upcycling Innovation Hub was established to champion textile waste recovery, upcycling and circular innovation. Our work connects two important ecosystems: Nairobi, a center of creativity, commerce, innovation and enterprise, and the Maasai Mara, a landscape renowned for its biodiversity, natural heritage and community-based conservation efforts. Through our presence, we aim to bridge urban innovation with community-driven environmental action.

OUR Vision

Sustainable Cities and communities where textile resources remain in circulation, waste is minimized, communities thrive, and sustainable production creates lasting environmental and economic benefits.

OUR Mission

To reduce textile waste through innovative circular solutions, promote upcycling and responsible consumption, empower communities through skills and green enterprise, and build partnerships that advance sustainable development.

We believe textile waste should not be viewed as a resource with the potential to create new products, skills, businesses and livelihood opportunities. By promoting collection, reuse, upcycling, sustainable production, environmental awareness and partnerships, we seek to reduce waste while empowering communities, particularly women and young people.

We aspire to contribute to the SDGs and a circular economy where resources remain in use for longer, communities benefit from green opportunities, and environmental responsibility becomes part of everyday life. Through collaboration, creativity and innovation, we are building a movement that connects people, livelihoods and ecosystems.
